In some applications, it is not possible to mount a pump in a position where the chamber is flooded and this will require the installation of a self-priming pump. Normally the way this works is that the action of the impeller works to move the air through the pump body and create a vacuum in the supply side and draw the liquid up to the pumps head
There are many types of self-priming pumps and the design effects the speed of the priming of the supply side. Once the pump has water in the suction side then the flow of water is far quicker. A liquid ring pump can prime quickly, however, the aggressive action of the impeller type makes this type of pump noisier
